Rehabilitating Wildlife Classes
AWARE will be offering classes on wildlife rehabilitation at Niagara County Community College, Community Education.
The class will be in 2 four week sessions.
Session I: Mammal Rehabilitation
January 21, 2012 – February 11, 2012, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
This course is designed to prepare the student for beginning rehabilitation of wild mammals. Included in the course are;
NYS DEC licensing applications and legal issues, dealing with the public, safety in handling, capture techniques,
transporting, medical terminology, care of orphaned mammals, mammal formulas, caging, diseases of mammals, and
more. Information on specialized licensing for rabies vector species (RVS) will also be discussed.
Session II: Migratory Bird Rehabilitation
February 25, 2012 – March 17, 2012 10: AM – 1:00 PM
This session specifically focuses on the rehabilitation of migratory birds. Included in this session are; applying for USF&W
permits, legal issues, species identification, handling and safety, bird anatomy and physiology, care of orphaned birds,
bandaging, treatment techniques, diseases, housing, caging, pre-release conditioning. A necropsy (autopsy) will be
performed on a dead bird for those interested (optional).

̈ Guest speakers, who specialize in specific areas of wildlife rehabilitation, education, and falconry.
̈ NYS DEC Wildlife Rehabilitator study guides, and applications for Session I
̈ US Fish and Wildlife Rehabilitator applications for Session II.
Live animals, Handouts.
Following each sessions, all students are given a certificate of completion that can be used when applying for their license
and permit, and are encouraged to join our volunteer team. We are also in need of those that do not want to get licensed,who might be interested in helping in other areas. These include: fundraising, grant writing, capturing and transporting
animals to us or the veterinarian, public relations, construction of cages, begging for donations of materials and food (for
the animals, not us), and for helping at our educational programs “SHOW YOU CARE, BE AWARE!”
The teacher
Jacalyn L. Perry has been a licensed and permitted wildlife rehabilitator/educator since 1989, and is the founder of
AWARE. She is a member of the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association, the New York State Wildlife Rehabilitation
Council, Buffalo Ornithological Society, Cornell University Lab of Ornithology, and is a Licensed Physical Therapist Asst.,
with a full time job rehabilitating humans. She has been teaching “Rehabilitating Wildlife” since 1996.
