AWARE Wildlife Class 2012

AWARE is the first wildlife rehabilitation organization in Niagara County, and has been serving Niagara and Erie Counties for over 20 years. It is an all volunteer organization that cares for orphaned, injured, and distressed wildlife, with the goal of releasing them back into the wild. As an important aspect of our goal, we need to educate the public on how to prevent injuries to wildlife, when to intervene, what to do with orphans, and how we can help the environment with regards to wildlife. We hope to encourage people in the community to become more active in helping wildlife by offering this course, and we can help those who are already involved, learn more about care and treatment techniques.

We have developed a training program for those interested in becoming volunteers and licensed/permitted wildlife rehabilitators and/or working with AWARE. The program will be taught at NCCC under "Non-Credit Spring 2012". Links available bellow.

The course will include:

Session I - This course is designed to prepare the student for beginning rehabilitation of wild mammals. Included in the course are;  NYS DEC licensing applications and legal issues, dealing with the public, safety in handling, capture techniques, transporting, medical terminology, care of orphaned mammals, and diseases of mammals, and more. Information on special licensing for rabies vector species (RVS) will also be covered.

Session II - This session specifically focuses on the rehabilitation of birds. Included in this session are; applying for USF&W permits, legal issues, species identification, handling and safety, bird anatomy and physiology, care of orphaned birds, bandaging, treatment techniques, housing, caging, pre-release conditioning and diseases. Following this session, all students are given a certificate of completion that can be used when applying for their license and permit, and are encouraged to join our volunteer team.
